Lokta Paper – White & Natural back in stock

Lokta Paper

White and Natural back in stock.

Lokta paper is handmade by local families in Nepal and is fair-trade classified. Made from the Daphne plants (Daphne bholua and Daphne papyracea) in Nepal’s Himalayan forests. After harvesting, the plant completely regenerates to full maturity again within 4-5 years. If left to grow past maturity the Lokta Plant will not have any new growth, therefore, the harvesting process helps the forest continue to grow.

Lokta’s paper durability & resistance to tearing, humidity, insects and mildew have traditionally made it the preferred choice for the recording of official government records & sacred religious texts. The earliest surviving lokta paper document appears in Nepal’s National Archives (Kathmandu) the sacred Buddhist text, the Karanya Buha Sutra. The Karanya Buha Sutra was written in Lichchhavi script & block printed on lokta paper (estimated to be between 1,000 and 1,900 years old).

Once the lokta paper is produced it can last for some millennia (2000–3500 years).
